John and Belinda Spear are the couple behind this dynamic chocolate shop. John is the chief confectioner, affectionately known as ‘chocolate dude’. Belinda is quality and beauty control, responsible for artful hand-packaging and product display.
The Spears bought the three-year-old Le Chocolatier company in 2004 after a successful career owning a catering company in England. With John and Belinda’s passion for chocolate, Le Chocolatier quickly grew beyond the Canmore basement where it was started, and they soon moved to a space in the industrial area of Canmore.
In December 2008, Le Chocolatier finally moved into the customized chocolate-making factory and retail store that is their business hub today. They supply locals and visitors with chocolate treats from this retail location, and also sell wholesale to retail food chains and hotels in Alberta and across the country.
John continually stretches the boundaries of creative chocolate making. Brand-new inventive confections are added each year to Le Chocolatier’s offering. “I don’t want to think outside the box,” John claims, “I want to recreate the box!”
Despite their phenomenal growth, you will find John and Belinda in the store if you pop in for a chocolate goodie. John will be crafting chocolates or joking with customers, and Belinda will be packaging and filling custom orders. They always have time to talk or create a custom box of chocolates for you.
